Fishing for the long term

Resource conservation has been core to Ocean Choice since the company was founded. Around 90% of the seafood we sell is MSC certified or covered by a fishery improvement project, and we were the first fishing company in Canada to be certified by Green Marine.

Our commitment

Healthy stocks, healthy business

As a major quota holder, our business depends on the long-term health of the resource. We fish selectively, avoid sensitive spawning periods, and use gear and technology designed to target the right species and let juveniles escape.

We work hand in hand with governments, scientists and researchers, and have invested in fisheries science — including a multi-year research chair at Memorial University focused on improving fish-stock assessments. We are credited with helping rebuild stocks such as yellowtail flounder.

How we fish responsibly

Conservation built into operations

Sustainability is not a slogan here — it is how we run the fishery, the vessels and the plants.

Selective

Right species, right size

Selective gear and modern technology target the intended species and let juvenile fish escape, reducing bycatch and protecting future stocks.

Science-led

Partnering on assessment

We collaborate with governments, scientists and academia — including a research chair at Memorial University — to keep stock assessments accurate.

Lower impact

Greener vessels & plants

From energy-saving electric winches on the M.V. Calvert to Green Marine certification, we work to cut the environmental footprint of our operations.

The first Green Marine fishing company in Canada

Ocean Choice was the first fishing company in Canada — and remains the only one in North America — to be certified by Green Marine, a rigorous, independently verified environmental certification programme for the marine industry.

Our newest vessel, the M.V. Calvert, was built to a modern, efficient design with electric winch systems engineered to save around 172,800 kWh of energy a year compared with traditional hydraulics.
